About Mingus Mapps
Mingus Mapps, was instilled with a passion for public service from an early age. Growing up in a working-class family, Mingus witnessed the struggles his parents faced to make ends meet. In lieu of after-school care, he spent his afternoons at the local welfare office where his mother worked, exposing him to the ways in which government could assist families like his own. Mingus embraced the ethos of customer service and respect for others cultivated in that environment, shaping his future commitment to public service. His affinity for Portland blossomed during summers spent exploring the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest, fostering his appreciation for community and kindness.
Following in the footsteps of his family, Mingus embarked on his academic journey at Reed College in 1986, where he immersed himself in political science studies and forged lifelong friendships. After graduation in 1990, Mingus honed his skills working alongside trailblazing figures in Oregon politics before pursuing advanced studies at Cornell University. His return to Portland saw him become a dedicated educator and community advocate, driven by a desire to create positive change. Mingus’s dedication to public service culminated in his historic election to the Portland City Council in 2020, where he continues to champion equitable development and community empowerment.
