Panel Q&A for “Sing Sing” with Nate Query from The Decemberists

Following the screening of SING SING on Wednesday, August 21st, we will host a special in-person Panel Q&A with Grammy Award-nominated musician Nate Query, an esteemed outside facilitator for a Portland prison music program.

As an added bonus, we will be screening the short documentary MUSIC FROM THE INSIDE, produced by Outside the Frame (OTF) with Open Hearts Open Minds, which will play before every showing of SING SING.

Nate will be joined in this panel by Makayla Caldwell, an OTF filmmaker and Kap-One Kapone, a prison music program participant who was featured in the documentary. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to watch a transformative film and interact with Nate, Makayla and Kap-One following the screening!

About Our Special Guests

NATE QUERY, Musician & Program Facilitator

Nate Query has worked with Outta Sight Outta Mind Music (OSOMM) since 2019, acting as its outside facilitator since 2021. OSOM Music is a music program at a prison in Portland that has recorded hundreds of songs by incarcerated and formerly incarcerated men inside the prison and in the free world.

Nate Query is also a twice Grammy-nominated musician in Portland, Oregon. He is a founding member of the bands The Decemberists and Black Prairie, and has recorded and performed with numerous acts in Portland and across the country. He is working on a solo project expected to be released in 2025.

MAKAYLA CALDWELL, Filmmaker & Instructor

Makayla, 27, caught the film bug after completing an internship with Outside the Frame in 2018. Eighteen months later, she broke into the film industry; she’s directed photography for Gatorade, worked on countless productions for major streaming services and talks to artists about creating meaningful works.

In 2023, Makayla returned to Outside the Frame as a Production Lead, directing and producing their contract work, as well as managing the Equipment Room; all while teaching classes within the organization and Production Assistant Pathways.

KAP-ONE KAPONE, Documentary Participant

Kap-One Kapone is a Portland-based rapper who has been collaborating with Outta Sight Outta Mind Music since 2021. Featured in the documentary MUSIC FROM THE INSIDE, Kap-One shares his journey through the transformative power of music. He believes that “whatever I’m going through, the next person could be going through, too,” and uses his music to express the universal emotions we all face.

Music has been a constant in Kap-One’s life, and the program played a crucial role in helping him navigate his experiences. Keep an eye out for his new music as he continues to share his story.

About the Film SING SING

Most of the cast is made up of formerly incarcerated members of the real-life theatre troupe and everyone involved in the production received an equal pay rate, and collectively own the movie.

Divine G., imprisoned at Sing Sing for a crime he didn’t commit, finds purpose by acting in a theatre group with other incarcerated men. When a wary outsider joins the group, the men decide to stage their first original comedy.
