What’s an independent film, anyway?
When people hear independent film, they sometimes think of small, obscure movies that only play in art-house theaters. But that’s just part of the picture.
An independent film is any movie made outside the major Hollywood studio system. That could mean it was produced by a smaller studio, funded by private investors, or distributed in a unique way.
Indie films can be big or small, serious or silly, and yes, many become mainstream hits. Some even win Oscars or dominate the box office! You’ve probably loved plenty of independent films without even realizing it.
